Carousels of
Southern Ontario
Centreville's Antique Carousel
Centreville's
Antique Carousel is one of Southern Ontario's most charming and
unique. Located on Centre Island, near the port of Toronto, it is
accessible only by ferry during the summer months. Built in 1908,
it features 52 animals, 3 abreast with 36 jumpers and 2 chariots,
plus a Wurlitzer band organ. The hand-carved carousel was built
by the G.A. Dentzel Steam & Horsepower Co.
Some of the finest pieces are the menagerie which include a
tiger, lion, stag, ostriches, pig, cats and zebra. Centreville
has built a rather un-charming housing for the carousel, a big
ugly and dark cement roundhouse - but perhaps this can be
forgiven, since the carousel was once damaged by a hurricane, and
the current owners keep it in very good repair.
