Carousels of

The Port Dalhousie Antique Carousel - St.
Catharines,
Ontario
This
is a special and much-loved carousel, where you can still ride for a
nickel, and where the last ride of the day is free. The Port Dalhousie carousel is a Looff
menagerie carousel, four rows deep, with a gigantic lion, a small zebra, and several rams.
Built between 1898 and 1905, in Riverside, RI, it was moved to Lakeside park, just outside
St. Catharines in 1921, one of many different attractions set up in the park. In the early 70's,
a local committee, led by antique dealer Dorothy Crabtree, raised enough money to purchase
the carousel, and donated it to the city of St, Catharines, with the understanding that
the cost of a ride would remain at 5 cents a ride.
Storms,
vandalism, and a 1973 fire have taken their toll on the Port Dalhousie carousel. The
animals have been lovingly restored, and are clearly well-maintained. Nine
animals were removed over the winter of 2001-2002, stripped and fully restored.
Port
Dalhousie is the perfect setting for an antique carousel. Sleepy, romantic, and idyllic,
its many Victorian homes show off a lovely variety of flowers. Port Dalhousie offers a
perfect white-sand beach, with a small clutch of charming shops offering treats and gifts
for travelers. I am looking forward to my next visit, when I plan to take the ferry across
from Toronto.
