How to Draw ... a Horse

For the purposes of this demonstration, we are going to start from a photograph, though you can also start by sketching live animals if you wish. 

First, start off by blocking out the form of the animal in circles and squares, like so:

Second, block-outline the basic outline (in green), then erase the circles and squares.

Finally, fill in the shadows and add details:
